Mitsumine Shrine
A mystical sanctuary in the clouds, guarded by wolves.
Located high in the mountains of Chichibu, Saitama, this shrine is famous for worshipping wolves as divine messengers and is considered one of the strongest 'power spots' in Kanto.
神社歷史緣起
Perched at an altitude of 1,100 meters, Mitsumine Shrine has an atmosphere completely unlike shrines in the city. Founded by Yamato Takeru, it has been a center of Shugendo (mountain asceticism) for centuries. The shrine worships 'O-Inu-sama' (honorable dog/wolf), reflecting the ancient Japanese reverence for the now-extinct Japanese wolf, which was believed to protect crops from boars and deer.
Its remote location meant it was a place for serious spiritual training. The ornate, colorful carvings on the shrine buildings, similar to Nikko Toshogu, show the influence of the diverse ascetic monks and pilgrims who gathered here.

Instead of the usual 'Komainu' (lion-dogs), the guardians here are wolves. Their lean, sharp forms can be seen all over the grounds. The 'Zuishinmon' gate is grand and colorful, marking the entrance to the sacred precinct.
Look for the 'Dragon in the Stone' on the pavement near the main hall—a natural pattern that appeared after water was poured on the stone in 2012 (the Year of the Dragon), considered a miraculous sign. The shrine is often shrouded in mist, adding to its mystical aura.

The 'Setsubun' festival in February is unique here, featuring the ritual 'Goma' fire ceremony performed by mountain priests. The surrounding mountains are also beautiful during the autumn foliage season.
