Nikko Futarasan Shrine

While millions flock to the flashy Toshogu, Futarasan Shrine represents the original, ancient faith of Nikko. Founded in 782 by the monk Shodo Shonin, it is dedicated to the three sacred mountains of Nikko: Mt. Nantai, Mt. Nyoho, and Mt. Taro. For over 1,200 years, it has been a center of 'mountain worship' (Sangaku Shinko), where the mountains themselves are revered as deities.

The name 'Nikko' itself is derived from the shrine's name 'Futarasan' (which can be read as 'Niko', then changed to 'Nikko' meaning 'sunlight'). It was a powerful religious center long before the Tokugawa shoguns chose Nikko as their resting place.

The entrance to the Nikko sacred area is marked by the 'Shinkyo' (Sacred Bridge), a beautiful vermilion lacquered bridge that spans the Daiya River. It belongs to Futarasan Shrine and is one of the three finest bridges in Japan.

The main shrine grounds, located near Toshogu, are peaceful and filled with ancient cedar trees. Notable spots include the 'Couple Cedar' and 'Parent-Child Cedar', trees that have grown together, symbolizing strong family bonds and happy marriage. There is also a 'Ghost Lantern' (Bake-doro) that is said to have spooked samurai in the past.

The 'Yayoi Matsuri' in April is a grand festival announcing the arrival of spring to Nikko. Beautifully decorated floats called 'Hana-yatai' are pulled through the streets. In August, the 'Nantai-san Tohai-sai' sees thousands of pilgrims climb Mount Nantai at night to watch the sunrise from the summit shrine.
