Dedicated to Emperor Tenji, who introduced the first water clock to Japan. It is the holy land of Competitive Karuta (card game), popularized globally by the anime/manga 'Chihayafuru'.

神社歷史緣起

Built in 1940 near the site of the ancient Otsu Palace. Though the buildings are modern, it honors the 7th-century Emperor Tenji.

The vermilion gateway is iconic. The shrine hosts the national championship for Competitive Karuta. There is also a Clock Museum on the grounds.
