The grand head shrine of the Hachiman network, the most numerous type of shrine in Japan. It is a massive complex with a unique architectural style called 'Hachiman-zukuri' and a history entwined with Buddhism.

神社歷史緣起

Established in the Nara period (8th century), Usa Jingu played a crucial role in the development of 'Shinbutsu Shugo' (syncretism of Buddhism and Shinto). The Hachiman deity was the first kami to be given the title of 'Wait Bosatsu' (Great Bodhisattva).

It was deeply respected by the Imperial Court and the Minamoto samurai clan, spreading Hachiman worship throughout Japan.

境內看點

The vast grounds contain the Upper Shrine (Kaminomiya) and Lower Shrine (Shimomiya). The vermilion-lacquered main hall is a National Treasure and the prototype of Hachiman architecture.

The 'Meoto Iwa' (Husband and Wife Rocks) and the giant camphor tree (800 years old) are power spots. If you find two triangular paving stones at the Upper Shrine, verify their luck!

重大祭典

The 'Hojyo-e' (Release of Living Beings) festival originated here, combining Buddhist compassion (releasing captive fish/birds) with Shinto rituals.
